Every Time I Felt Homesick
data visualization sculpture
I collected a week’s worth of data on every time I felt homesick during my time in college. For each moment, I took note of the intensity of the feeling, what I was doing, whether I was alone or not, specific memories that would pop up in my head, and other feelings that were associated with being homesick. After data collection, I created a sculpture piece accompanied by a key that would explain what each piece meant.

Each orb stemming from the cloud can be picked up and read by the user. The sculpture is placed on top of a spinning wheel where a visual key is displayed. The key on the wheel informs the audience on what each orb means, acting as a reading tool to help unfold my story.
Process
For every time I felt homesick, I tracked the intensity of the feeling, what I was doing in the moment, where I was, specific memories associated with the feeling, and other emotions felt during the moment of homesickness in my sketchbook. After a week of collecting data, I visualized every time I felt homesick through an illustrative physical card. This helped inform the final sculptural output.
